Background: Dysmenorrhea is a painful condition occurring during menstruation and is one of the most common complaints that interfere with daily activities among adolescent girls. In Indonesia, the prevalence of dysmenorrhea reaches 64.25%, consisting of 54.89% primary dysmenorrhea and 9.36% secondary dysmenorrhea. One non-pharmacological approach that can be utilized to reduce menstrual pain is the consumption of turmeric–tamarind decoction. This traditional herbal remedy is believed to reduce menstrual pain due to its curcumin content, which has anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of turmeric–tamarind decoction in reducing dysmenorrhea pain intensity among adolescent girls.
Methods: This research employed a quantitative pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The population consisted of 27 adolescent girls, with 22 students experiencing dysmenorrhea selected as the sample using purposive sampling. The study was conducted at Muhammadiyah 1 Gunung Pelindung Private Senior High School from August 1 to September 1, 2025. Respondents received an intervention in the form of turmeric–tamarind decoction prepared from 50 grams of turmeric, 12.5 grams of tamarind, and 25 grams of palm sugar, served in 200 ml, and consumed twice daily for three consecutive days. Pain intensity was measured using a combination of the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test.
Results: The findings showed that the mean pain score before the intervention was 5.18, which decreased to 1.45 after consumption of the turmeric–tamarind decoction. Statistical testing produced a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), indicating that the turmeric–tamarind decoction had a significant effect on reducing dysmenorrhea pain. The study recommends that adolescent girls consider turmeric–tamarind decoction as a safe, accessible, and affordable natural alternative therapy to relieve menstrual pain.
