Warm Water CompressAbstract
Fever commonly occurs in infants following the administration of the DPT-HB-HIB immunization. This condition often causes parental concern, and management is generally carried out using non- pharmacological interventions, such as aloe vera compresses. Aloe vera contains lignin and saponins, which are believed to help reduce fever. This study aimed to determine the effect of aloe vera compresses on reducing body temperature in febrile infants aged 2–4 months following DPT-HB-HIB immunization. Aloe vera compresses were applied when the infant’s body temperature exceeded
37.5°C. The procedure involved cutting aloe vera into pieces measuring 5 × 15 cm and soaking them in clean water for 10 minutes. The aloe vera skin was then peeled, washed with clean water, and rubbed with a small amount of salt to remove the mucilage. The aloe vera was subsequently wrapped in sterile gauze and placed on the infant’s forehead for 15 minutes. This study employed a quasi- experimental method with a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design. The sampling technique used was accidental sampling, with a total sample of 20 infants divided into experimental and control groups. Data analysis was conducted using the Paired t-test, which showed a p-value of
0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant effect of aloe vera compresses on temperature reduction. The Independent t-test results yielded a p-value of 0.045 (< 0.05), demonstrating a significant difference between aloe vera compresses and warm water compresses. The mean reduction in infant body temperature using aloe vera compresses was 0.4°C, while warm water compresses resulted in an average temperature reduction of 0.2°C, indicating that aloe vera compresses were more effective than warm water compresses. It is recommended that mothers with infants consider aloe vera as an alternative non-pharmacological intervention for managing post-DPT-HB-HIB immunization fever.
